What Is a Baguette?
A baguette diamond is a long, rectangular step cut diamond. It’s called “baguette” from the French, resembling a loaf of bread (“Diamond cut”).
The baguette diamond was originally introduced in the 1920s during the Art Deco period. Madeline Fraser, founder and CEO of Gemist, states that the baguette is “reminiscent of the roaring ‘20s” with a “vintage nostalgia that is incredibly alluring” (“The Complete Guide”).
The baguette diamond actually requires fewer cuts than other diamonds; it only has 14 facets, which means precision in the cutting is extremely important. Fraser says, “To really show off the shape and look of the stone, the best setting is solitaire or solitaire pavé. With this setting, the baguette stone can be oriented north/south for a classic look or east/west for a more modern approach” (“The Complete Guide”).
